State Help Not Enough As Dairy Farmers Watch Milk Prices Drop
This month, milk prices have plummeted. Right now, dairy farmers in Massachusetts are making about a dollar a gallon -- but the cost of producing a gallon of milk is at least double that, according to Chip Hager. He's a dairy farmer in Colrain and president of the Massachusetts Association of Dairy Farmers. This isn't the first time the state's dairy farmers have been in crisis. Last summer, the legislature passed a bill based on recommendations from a state task force. That bill aimed at helping the industry if milk prices fell below the cost of production. But, Hager says, they didn't expect that to happen quite so soon. He told WFCR's Tina Antolini that the global economic crisis has changed the way people consume milk products, both here in the U.S. and around the world.
