Changes At The Advocate, And Summertime Primary Races

Aug 10, 2018

There are changes in store for the long-time alternative publication The Valley Advocate. In a cost-cutting move, the Advocate will now be supervised by the arts and culture editor at The Daily Hampshire Gazette

The Advocate and Gazette have the same owner -- and the Advocate, until recently, was a weekly, before shiting to every other week. And the editor-in-chief at the Gazette says the Advocate will still have an independent voice.

The Connecticut primaries are on Tuesday, August 14. Governor Dannel Malloy is not running for re-election, and there are two Democrats and five Republicans vying to replace him. Some of the key issues have been what to do about Hartford's debt, how Republican the canidates see each other and the felony conviction of candidate Joe Ganim.

Meanwhile, Vermont voters will also go to the polls August 14. Incumbent Governor Phil Scott, a Republican, is facing a primary challenge from a lone rival. And there are four Democrats looking to move on to November, including a 14-year-old

These primaries are taking place at a time of the year where many people are away on vacation. Massachusetts grappled with when to hold its primaries, and decided on Tuesday, September 4, the day after Labor Day, and a three-day weekend for many. Is there a better time of year to hold these?
