- Biography
Tom Reney has been producing Jazz a la Mode at WFCR since 1984. He began working in jazz radio in 1977 at WCUW, a community-licensed radio station near the Clark University campus in his hometown of Worcester, Massachusetts. Worcester provided Tom with a number of formative experiences that ignited his passion for the music, including weekly jam sessions at the Kitty Kat Lounge featuring local legends Howie Jefferson, Reggie Walley, Babe Pino, and Bunny Price, and area appearances by jazz greats Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, and Count Basie. Boston was an easy trek down Route 9, where the Jazz Workshop, Joe's Place, and Paul's Mall featured the best in jazz and blues, and well-stocked record stores offered informal seminars in jazz history and discography. Tom earned a BA from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where he majored in American Studies under the tutelage of Professors Archie Shepp, Horace Boyer, and Joseph Skerritt.
In addition to his hosting duties at New England Public Radio, Tom works as a freelance writer and lectures on jazz and American music topics at UMass, Amherst, Hampshire, Mt. Holyoke and Smith Colleges.
