The famed vocalist Nancy Wilson died on Thursday at 81 at her home in California. The Chillicothe, Ohio, native was an elegant beauty whom I first knew of through her television appearances as both a singer and actress. I remember feeling somewhat mesmerized by her, and as I've reviewed clips of her on YouTube in recent years, I've concluded that her stillness and self-possession would have drawn me in but also puzzled me. By comparison, everyone else on TV seemed outsized, but she was seemed perfectly herself.

The number of hate crimes reported to Massachusetts increased by almost 10 percent to a 10-year high in 2017, the state said. A new report also found a majority of law enforcement agencies reported they had experienced no bias-motivated incidents last year.
