Watch Here: Yo-Yo Ma plays Bach's Solo Cello Suites Live

May 21, 2020

Join us right here on Sunday, May 24 beginning at 3:00 p.m. for a livestream of A Musical Memorial and Tribute: Yo-Yo Ma plays Bach's Solo Cello Suites Live - a one-time-only event featuring a live performance of Bach suites. You can also listen on 88.5FM NEPR, or stream the music only through our website stream.

Cellist Yo-Yo Ma will perform live from the studios of WGBH Boston as a memorial for those we have lost in the pandemic and a tribute to the resilience of our communities.

This performance comes during what would have been the now-postponed final leg of Ma's The Bach Project, a 36-stop, six-continent tour of the complete cello suites. The Project is part of a larger conversation about how culture can help us to imagine and build the world we want.

In August 2018, Yo-Yo Ma began a two-year journey to perform Johann Sebastian Bach’s six suites for solo cello in 36 locations around the world, music that is among the first Yo-Yo ever learned when he began playing the cello at age four. The project was motivated not only by his six-decade relationship with the music, but also by Bach’s ability to speak to our shared humanity at a time when our civic conversation is so often focused on division.

The final leg of The Bach Project was cut short by COVID-19. The May 24 live broadcast keeps its spirit alive.

The show is presented by WCRB Classical Boston, and hosted by Brian McCreath, host of the Boston Symphony Orchestra broadcasts, and producer and host of The Bach Hour.
