At 10:00 am Friday morning, hundreds of students walked out of Ridgefield High School to send a message to lawmakers that they want new gun legislation enacted. Theirs was one of 2,500 schools across the country taking part in the day of action.

More than two months ago, Nikolas Cruz allegedly entered Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, and opened fire. In all, he shot and killed 17 people, leaving another 17 wounded.

Talk show host Alex Jones has responded to a lawsuit from the parents of two children killed in the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Conn. Jones has repeatedly claimed on his website, Infowars, that the shooting was staged.

When Lane Murdock, a high school sophomore, heard that 17 high school students and educators had been killed in a shooting in Parkland, Fla., she says she felt numb.

To her, and so many others, mass shootings can feel all too common in the U.S.

"In the time I've been in high school we've had the Pulse, Las Vegas and now, [the Parkland] shooting," Murdock says.

Students across the country are walking out of school Friday to advocate for gun control. In Massachusetts, where schools are closed for vacation week, local activists are holding a community conversation in Springfield.
